Why is there a different way of saying 'bag'?

I noticed it in some of my friends pronounce the 'a' in a few words differently. Like bag they say b'aye'g. hag becomes h'aye'g. I don't think its a Canadian thing or anything just wondering why some people pronounce the 'a' differently and where it comes from.
